# POP3 information

> How IMAP and POP3 differ, when to use each, and which POP3 ports Grid Hosting supports.

Grid Hosting supports both **IMAP** and **POP3** so you can access your mail the way your workflow needs.

## Why IMAP is usually the better choice

For most people we recommend **IMAP**. Messages stay on the server, and your mail apps stay in sync across phones, laptops, and tablets. That fits how most people use email today.

## When POP3 can make sense

**POP3** downloads mail to one place and is less about keeping everything synchronized on the server. It can be a fit if you are pulling mail into another system (for example Gmail or another provider) that expects a classic “download and manage locally” setup.

Wherever you can, prefer **IMAP** for a smoother experience and stronger security.

## POP3 ports

| Port    | Use                                                    |
| ------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| **995** | Secure POP3 (SSL/TLS). Use this for encrypted traffic. |
| **110** | Unencrypted POP3. Not recommended.                     |

For the best experience, use **IMAP** when your client and use case allow it.
